Ziporah Janowski – Founder & President
Leaving a 25 year career as vice president and chief legal ethics officer of MMC, a global financial services company with 55,000 employees and associate general counsel of Mercer, an MMC Company, to pursue a passion for helping others live a healthy life; Janowski opened Shane’s adult programs in 2008.
Our family founded and owns Camp Shane, since 1968 the first co-ed children’s weight loss camp in the world. In 2007, I had an epiphany that there was a need to cater to adults and executives like me who were overworked and overstressed and needed a fresh start and solution to their weight and fitness problems.” Janowski says.
Though I always watched my weight and tried to exercise, being a busy lawyer and corporate executive took its toll. I traveled globally. The “to do” list never seemed to get shorter. Overseeing a multi-billion dollar litigation docket and a team of attorneys was stressful to say the least. So I understand the value and the necessity for executives to take the time for them to get a wellness realignment. And, unlike other recreational vacations, the benefits of this program don’t evaporate the moment you get back to the office.”
Now, with five kids’ summer camp and adult weight-loss vacation locations and a year round location at the Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas, Janowski isn’t slowing down—and neither are the waves of people who are visiting Shane from around Texas, the U.S. and the world to learn about getting fit, eating right and making a lifestyle change for a healthier outlook on life.
Ziporah has helped Shane expand its reach and is passionate about creating a world-class educational program and post program support options. She has lent her expertise to educational videos on DiscoveryHealth.org, been featured on Spa Finders’ blog, created a cooking video series and recently published a cookbook.
In the nonprofit sector, Ziporah serves on a working group advising U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) on childhood obesity. She has also launched Shane Cares, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. Shane Cares will extend Camp Shane’s summer weight loss programs to economically disadvantaged children who would not otherwise have access to such opportunities.
Ziporah served as co-chair of the Directorships & Corporate Governance Committee of the Financial Women’s Association of New York and sat on the board of the InterOrganization Network, a national organization dedicated to the advancement of women to boards of directors and executive suites of public companies.
Don Canada, Jr. – Health & Wellness Expert
What he’s done, however, is anything but average. In just a few short years, Canada has gone from a self-professed “everyman” to a full-fledged Ironman. In the process he’s managed to balance his personal and professional lives while making a positive impact on his employees, clients, family and friends, providing them with the knowledge and drive so that they may follow in his footsteps toward a healthier life. He lost 55 lbs. and has maintained the loss for the past 5 years.
Canada admits that trying to find the proper balance between work, family and health did not come easy. His commitments were — and are — family first: he is owner and founder of Silicon Benefits, Inc., and The Wellness Difference enabling him to assist his clients with planning, prevention and protection. He is the chairman of Be Healthy Lake Travis, a board member of the Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis, an Ambassador to the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce, served five years on the parent and sports board with the Lake Travis Youth Association, serves as a Strategic Coach and is a member of several state and national business organizations.
But reading the pending healthcare legislation made him realize something — if he hoped to offer clients a “strategy to achieve optimal health, productivity, and a competitive advantage,” then his companies needed to lead the way. And that meant he needed to lead the way. “I had a big eye-opening experience,” he said. “I realized before I had even gotten 25 percent of the way through, things had to change with me, and I’m going to have to get in shape. I couldn’t tell everybody to stop smoking and get active and lose weight if I didn’t lead by example.”
Canada’s attempts to improve his health have caused a ripple effect. Not only is he living healthier, but those around him are picking up on his lifestyle changes, and smarter choices are being made by their families as well. “I’ve got a little girl who’s 8 and twin boys, 7,” said Angie Martin, executive assistant at Silicon Benefits. “When they want a snack, one boy says, ‘Mom, can I have some fruit?’ My daughter asks, ‘Mom, can I have yogurt?’ Not only did it affect me, it also affected these three little lives. “They learned at an early age it’s not all about the McDonald’s window.”
In 2012, Don ran in 4 Ironman events, starting with the grueling St. George, UT full distance Ironman 140.6, fitting in 2 Half Ironman 70.3 events, and ending with the Cozumel full distance Ironman in November. In 2013, Don has already completed a Half Ironman 70.3 at Galveston, TX and is heading into a full distance Ironman in May at The Woodlands.
As a health and wellness consultant, Don met Ziporah via a client introduction and there was a complete click in their missions. Don went to SDR to experience the program, and was impressed with their passion for helping people not only achieve results, but with the post-program follow through. This experience led to the alliance that created the Shane Executive & HR Leadership Wellness Program that you are reading about today.
